Red oak One-way mirror film Raspberry Pi MagicMirror Google Home

Built a Raspberry Pi smart mirror in a red oak frame: MagicMirror display behind one-way glass, integrated Google Home audio.

Scope

  • Frame: Red oak
  • Glass: ~20×30 inches, one-way mirror film
  • Display: Monitor behind the lower half
  • Brain: Raspberry Pi, MagicMirror
  • Audio: Integrated Google Home
  • Build time: ~6 weeks of evenings

How it goes together

Red oak frame around a roughly 20×30 inch sheet of glass coated with one-way mirror film. A monitor sits behind the lower half of the glass; the upper half stays opaque-looking mirror. A Raspberry Pi runs MagicMirror as the display layer, rendering date, weather, and calendar overlays through the glass. Audio is handled by a separate speaker setup with a Google Home as the input source.

Build

Six weeks of evenings. The skills (woodworking, Pi setup, MagicMirror configuration) were already in hand; the build was execution, not learning. No do-overs.
